UK student thinking about starting college in the USA?
I'm a 16-year-old student and I am about to leave compulsory education in the UK in May 2011. I will leave with several qualifications that are called GCSE's. I then hope to go to a Sixth Form Centre in September 2011 to gain my A-Level qualifications. This is a two year course. Normally, after you leave sixth form at age 18, you would go to university or get a job. I want to go to university, but not in the UK. I hope to study nursing in Tampa, Florida. I have looked on the college/university websites and as I am not from the USA this just confuses me. I was also wondering if there is any help with the fees. In the UK we have any medical degrees funded by the national health service. Obviously, due to the new government in place, this may change. I was wondering if anyone can give me any information regarding colleges/universities in Tampa as it would be a lot of help. Any useful links would be helpful, but please understand that I am from the UK and know nothing about the USA education system. Many thanks in advance, Lauren.

Start college in USA which you need to pay thousands for....or go to college for free in UK. I know which one I would choose.

college is expensive here. We don't have government programs to pay for medical schooling. and out of country tuition would be insanely high. If you plan on going to school here and then having a career in UK I would skip the USA all together. Schooling in UK for a career in UK is a smart idea. Schooling in USA for a career in UK doesn't make sense.

As you are 18 you are the normal age when students start college, we use the words college and university pretty much interchangeably in the US. I do not know if any of your studies would transfer into any units in the US university system so lets just assume they do not. To get a Medical Degree in the US, you would need to go to a 4 year university where you can major in anything, but you must take what are called Pre-Med subjects to get into Medical School (you can google these requirements). You would need a 3.5+ Grade Point Average on these plus an excellent score on a test called the MCAT to get into Med School. You would go to Med School for 4 years and then do one year of internship. If you want to specialize you would do 3 more years of residency in your specialty. You would not receive any help from the US government. You would be paid during your residency, but not much. Most doctors in the US graduate with $200,000 in debt.

If I were you (and this is just my personal opinion) I would take advantage of the free education offered to you there while it lasts! I am a college student in the U.S. right now and not only is paying for school EXPENSIVE, but it is very hard to try to work full time to make money for cost of living) and go to school. If you are wanting to come and live in the U.S. you could always move here after you have completed school. Then you would have already learned your skill and this would make it easier for you to find a job here and help get you on your feet. Honestly, the fact that it doesn̢۪t cost anything to go to school in the UK almost has me considering moving there! Hope this helps!

Does the Air Force or Navy accept a foreign bachelor degree
Does the Air Force or Navy accept a foreign bachelor degree?
Hi: For me is really is hard to get into a college because my GPA is 1.94 and really sucks. I got that GPA when I came to USA and began to study again in the HS like a transfer student. We have a different education system and when I came, all my good grades (for us) changed from good to bad!. I want to become a nurse BUT again, nobody will accept me and my father does not want to help me to go to the college.... He will kick me out from the house in 2012 and I have decided to repeat my senior year to improve my GPA.... Therefore i just have 2 years more. I have decided to go to the Navy or Air Force but again, is 90% impossible to be accepted in a college. In my country we have 2 university "accredited" by USA. So, If I comeback to my country, I get my bachelor degree and join to the military.... Do they accept me my foreign bachelor degree? Thank you

not likely. all foerign degrees must be vetted by a US accredited college and most will NOT grant degrees based on classes taken outside of the US. at most you might get a few crediots but certainly not enough to be considered a Bachelor;s degree in the US also if you are not a US citizen you may not be a Nurse. Only US BSN degrees are accepted to be eligible to seek a commission as a nurse. you will ahve to go to a local communtiy collge first to bring yoru GPA up high enough to have a remote shot at being accepted to Nursing school.

Jobs that would allow for US relocation
Jobs that would allow for US relocation?
I am looking into university degrees in Australia (I am an Aussie citizen) at the moment and there are several fields I am interested in. I want to move to the US or Canada within a few years after graduating with a degree. What jobs/career fields would offer a high chance of the possibility of relocating to one of these two countries? I am aware that there are job opportunities through agencies for nursing that can help you gain employment in the USA and Canada, but are there other agencies/opportunities that would provide employment like this? Thanks

Physicians, surgeons, RN (4 year degree nurses), some engineers in mechanical design, electronics, and software engineering, and a very few other professions would be the most likely choices to be able to get a U.S. work visa, an arduous and expensive effort which you must persuade a potential employer to do on your behalf. Another means is to work for a multi-national company which relocates you. The large hotel chains, manufacturing, transportation, and similar companies are the way to do it, especially if your skills are less technical.

If you were to go to the US or Canada you would have to meet the criteria for nursing licensure as well as meet the requirements for a work visa or immigration. To get a Green Card so you can work in the US you are looking at about 6 year wait. Licensing can be a lengthy and expensive process as well.To qualify as an RN in Canada you need to have your BSN ( 4 year nursing degree) as well as meeting the requirements for immigration or a work visa.( but the wait is not as long as that for a Green Card) US and Canadian nurses are generalist trained so you would need theory and clinical hours in all areas including adult, peds, OB/maternity and mental health nursing. Using an agency does change/speed up any of this process. They cannot get you a license or work visa any faster than you can yourself. All you are paying them for is filling out papers that you can easily fill out yourself. Using an agency does not change the fact that you would need a nursing license and work visa/immigration before you could work there.Being a nurse does not make it any easier to get permission to work in another country.Especially right now with thousands of new grads struggling to find work in both countries.
