I
am an RN, and decided to take some time off (3 yrs so far). I did this
for several reasons: 1. to spend more time with my family(my children
are in elementary school now) 2. being a nurse is very stressful,
physically and mentally 3. long hours (no more 8 hour shifts, it's 12
hour shifts now, 3-4 times a week) and most of the time I ended up
staying later to catch up on charting. 4. nurses don't get holidays
and weekends off 5. most nurses work nights some time in their career
(I was working the night shift for 4 years waiting for a day shift in
my dept to open up) My body doesn't function well with a major loss of
sleep, I didn't sleep well in the daytime, especially with small
children. 6. Most people don't like being around sick people, who
likes to clean up vomit and diarrhea all the time, or being exposed to
God knows what!
There are many courageous, loving, and giving nurses who can take on the
required tasks of being a nurse, most people can't or won't.
I am taking a RN refresher course right now to update my skills, so that
I can jump back into the crazy world of being a full-time RN, with all
the pros and cons. God Bless Me, and all nurses!

Tambara
said it well....BURN OUT!! Hospitals do NOT take care of their nurses
as well as they should. It isn't just the pay, it is standing behind
themduring tough times.....Often, it is "blame the nurses" if a patient
is unhappy, when in fact it is often understaffing that should be
blamed. Every patient deserves excellent care from hospital
staff....understaffing leaves the nurse especially vulnerable and puts
their license on the line. I love the nursing staff I work with and we
have lost so many to places that show their nurses they care.....A few
years back we had a CEO who said that nurses "were a dime a dozen".
Guess what happened??? YUP! Many of our best nurses went some where to
work for people who actually valued them...on several levels. We have
had a shortage of nurses since....by the way...that CEO died of a
massive M.I. The hospital wanted to put her portrait in the cafeteria,
but they had so many staffers who objected, there is no portrait hung
anywhere in the hospital that we know of.

Nurses have a
crappy job. See the answer about the horrible hours, backbreaking work
no holidays and gross conditions. Not to mention those male doctors,
what jerks. My mother always told me not to be a nurse and she hates me
now what does that tell you. Plus no American wants to be a nurse
nowadays because of the above conditions so the US is looking for poor
women in other countries and trust me they are all women. They bring
them here educate them, house them and hold their VISAs hostage until
they fulfill some kind of "contract" to work for a certain hospital for a
certain amount of time. Didn't y'all see that special on 60 minutes a
few years back? And believe me when I tell you that a lot of other
professions do the same: bring foreigners here educate them, house them
and hold their VISAs hostage until they fulfill some kind of "contract"
to work for a certain amount of time. Why? because Americans won't do
those crappy jobs for NO Pay

Visa for working and living in the USA
Visa for working and living in the USA?
I'm 22, just finished at Bristol Uni and want to move to live permanently in NYC. If I get a job there will I be able to move their and get a visa to work? I have very good qualifications but Im still not sure how hard it is to be permitted because a lot of people say only people who are planning in working in areas such as teaching, nursing etc get work visas?

Hi.I think you should look into this more closely. There are a lot of American citizens out of work and looking for jobs too. By rights they should get preference over a foreigner. If the job you want can not be filled with a american citizen, then hire a foreigner. Good Luck

It seems like every young person in the U.K. wants to move to NYC...and many from the U.S. want to move to London. It is almost impossible to get a work permit in the U.S. The only way is to have a very badly needed work skill and find an employer to give you a contract and sponsor your work visa. See 1st site below. You simply cannot immigrate to the U.S. unless you have an immediate family member in the U.S. to sponsor you or have a VERY rare job skill the only other way is to apply Thur the Diversity lottery program. You have to register for the lottery 2 years in advance...then only 50,000 of the 10 million or so who apply are chosen for further evaluation...tough part is, U.K. citizens are not currently eligible to apply thru this program. See 2nd site. Have you ever spent time in NYC? Do you now it costs 4 times as much to live there than the average cost of living in the U.S.? What info is your decision based on...TV and movies? The truth is, it is nearly impossible for a U.K. citizen to immigrate to the u.S. European countries are open to you...have you considered one of those? See 3rd site to read visa requirements for the U.S. I am sure this is not the news you wanted to hear...but think creatively and use that great education you just got to find what you should do now.

You don't get much more scientific than biology or anatomy and physiology. If you mean why are there no rocket scientists. Thank God you don't have rockets to study. It isn't up to America to run your educational system. That's your job. Talk to Gloria.
2 :
I agree with the first answerer. If you want that the Philippines will have that course, go to USA, study the kind of science you want, go back to the Philippines, start a school about that then done. Period. Not as easy as it sounds, actually.
3 :
Why would USA do that? We got our own problems to deal with.
4 :
what's wrong to be a maid? our current president used to be a domesticated helper in dubai.
5 :
What we gonna do with that scientist degree? As far as I know there is not many job for that. Lots of people needing nurse but not so many is building a space ship.
6 :
first, there isn't much budget to fund for education like that second, no job available for that third, since we are small in population, and there is restrains in budget, the only education available are those subservient to first world countries. that's the fact
7 :
you sit on your backside and complain that the USA should teach some courses in Philippines . Why don't you ask why the Philippines does not teach ? Think , if it does not hurt your little head . What does the USA owe you ?

I live in Australia, and if I had to pick the top two highest sought after jobs here it would be a fridge mechanic and a nurse. So yes to your question absolutely.
2 :
yes but dealing with some patients that are drugs seeker is bad
3 :
I would say that yes, nursing is on the list as one of the demanding universal jobs a person can have. No matter where you are on thr globe and your geographical location, there is lways people that need healthcare - which makes nursing a demanding career. However, it takes a very special person to be a nurse, a good nurse, and love what they do.
4 :
Yes, nurses are in demand in many places. Before starting training you should decide where you want to work and examine where you could be allowed to work as training in one country usually is not valid in other countries.
