Is it possible to go to a community college from highschool and not know what you will major in?
Yea so i am a highschool senior in new york usa. I plan on going to a community college for the first 2 years.. and then transfer to a 4 year school. Um, is it possible for the 1st year in community college to just do classes that will help me towards any degree that i will plan on majoring in. such as accounting(CPA) buisness administration nursing ^ not sure which of these 3 that i want.. I plan on getting a BA degree in these majors.. so yea.. or wait , would i transfer after the 1st year of community college and take those pre req's or w.e? and then decide what i want to major in college my 2nd year of college. im so confused omg

Even four year colleges recognize that most people do not know what they want to do when they get out of high school; and those that think they do often change their minds. Check to see what classes are required in a four year college for the three majors you have picked, then see what courses they have in common. These will probably be general education requirements, such as English composition, a foreign language, math, etc. Take this type of classes at the community college. Community colleges are a very budget-conscious way to get a college degree - but you will miss out on the best education part of a four year college. You learn much more about yourself and those around you in a dorm than you will at home.

At most any school (university, community college etc) the first year is generally getting prerequisites and "core" classes completed. Most colleges now want students to be "well rounded" so you have to take your "gen. Eds" or general education classes - English, humanities (art/music), science, math, social studies. Most schools have a list of the general education requirements (how many credit hours of each you need). Since you're planning on going onto a 4 year school you should look at 1+ or 2+ programs (programs where the classes you take at community college lead directly into the classes at the 4 year school - my brother is doing this in his engineering program at our local community college and then going to the nearby state university). If you know where you'd like to go for your 4 year school you should look at what transfers from the community college you plan to attend. You should discuss this with your parents, your high school guidance counselor and when you sign up for classes at the community college they should assign you a course advisor - basically a guidance counselor in college - they can help you plan what courses you need to take and in what order (as classes build on each other you can't take certain ones until you take the required class before it or the class that goes with it [pre-requisites and co-requisites]). Good luck in school all are good areas to go into!
