Hello, in the U.S. a registered nurse is required to have a 4-year degree. The nurse practitioner program requires additional education with a masters. I am sure if you apply to masters programs with your degree as a transfer student you will be admitted. After all, Cuban education is much better than what you find here.

One Year Nursing If i already have Associate's degree in Health
One Year Nursing If i already have Associate's degree in Health?
is there a program for clinical professionals (i'm an x-ray tech) in the USA that's less than the 2 years needed for nursing? i already have the math, english, A+P, Phlebotomy, Health Sciences, etc. can i go for one year? i've been in the field for 10 years now, does my job experience count for any clinical?

Although some of the general studies classes will count most of it will not and it would still take you at least 18 months if not the whole 2 years. Your job experience would not count toward any clinicals as they are very different jobs.
2 :
Kathi is correct. Nursing is a unique profession and your work experience was not as a nurse, so no it will not count under the requirements set forth by numerous professional agencies which credential the education programs and help set standards for the state boards of nursing to determine eligibility for licensure as an RN. And the Assoc. Degree programs are usually structured so that the courses are sequential and must be completed in 2 years and no less.

I am 33 & trying to be a student nurse, is it possible? I live in Asia & want to find a nursing school in USA?
Is it possible to find a job after the training? I don't have Science background. But I have a bachelor degree. Does it count some scores? Anyone who knows the answer please help! I want to stay in the states of NJ or PA where I have some friends there.

I don't know about those areas but Fitchburg State in Fitchburg, Mass has a great nursing program. It is a state college so cheaper than most. They help with placement or they did years ago.
2 :
you can become a nurse at any age once you have completed nursing school and pass ur nclex . nursing is a great field with high demand, great pay, and flexibility like no other career offers .
3 :
There is a high demand now for nurses, the health care profession period. I'm 28, currently in nursing school and see alot of people that are older then me attending college. Sounds corney but It really never is too late to stop learning. Good luck!

Transferring a nursing license from New Zealand the the USA
Transferring a nursing license from New Zealand the the USA?
How hard is it to transfer a nursing license and degree from New Zealand the the USA? What would I have to do in order to be able to practice in the States? New Zealand bachelor's degrees only take 3 years to complete. Would that make things more difficult? I live in the States now, but am having a difficult time finding a nursing school that I can attend due to various reasons. My boyfriend lives in New Zealand and some schools there are cheaper than most here and take less time. Any advice? I am a US citizen. I am looking at studying in New Zealand though... So the visas wouldn't apply, if I'm not mistaken.. Ok, if the national government doesn't dictate it, how about transferring a license from New Zealand to any state really... I just want to know how difficult it would be and what I would have to do...

nursing licenses in the US are issued by the individual states, not by the national government. It follows that you want to contact the state board of nursing [or similar title] in the state you're interested in. They are probably online, but more technical questions such as you pose are likely not answered online and you'll have to pose the question and wait for a response. state requirements vary. some only require two years of nursing school, others require four years and a BSN degree. In general, the two year requirement states all honor licenses issued in other two year requirement states while the four year requirement states only honor licenses issued in other four year requirement states. Nurses are in some shortage in the United States in general and, more specifically, in Hawaii and several other states. This is important because you'll have to receive a visa to work here -- the most common such class [called "H1B"] requires the employer to certify that they've tried to hire citizens and can not find enough who are qualified. {I know this is the case for nurses in Hawaii and it's likely the case in much of California.}
2 :
You would not transfer a license at all. You would be trying to prove your education was up to US standards and get licensed here. You would need to take the US licensing exam (the NCLEX), as a basic start point. Be aware that all the medications are different from the US ones. The worst case scenario is that you pay a great deal of money to go to nursing school in New Zealand and can't get licensed in the US.

It depends where the MSN degree was done, how much experience in nursing, the level of experience you have, and depending on the state you may have to demonstrate your nursing skills by taking the nursing boards. In addition you may be asked to take an English test such as TOEFL, IELTS, or another type of test to demonstrate you level of English is sufficient to properly care for patients. Best advice for you is to contact the state board of nursing in the state you would like to be a nurse and ask what their requirements are for a nurse with a MSN degree from your country.

http://www.cgfns.org/ I don't know the details, but the website should help. I know that first you have to make sure the degree is accepted in the US. Then you would need to take the NCLEX. If it's been a while since you were in school, you may want to consider taking an NCLEX course to refresh. Even if you've specialized, the test is over everything.
2 :
She needs to contact the Board of Nursing in the state in which she wants to work. They will tell her how to proceed. They will assess her education and experience and decide if she is eligible to write the NCLEX.If she passes she will be granted a nursing license for that state.

Nursing program in USA
Nursing program in USA?
I was wondering how long will it take me to finish Nursing(associates degree) here in US. because I heard that it will sometimes take too long before a student get in the nursing program and it's just an associates degree. If I want to continue it to B.S.nursing wiil it take me another how many years?I'm currently in my 1st year and still in liberal arts. Please do answer if you only know the answer to mt question. Thank you so much! By the way, is it guaranteed that associates degree will only be for 2yrs? or It may extend to 3 or something years?

To become a nurse in the US, you get an Associates in Nursing. That takes two years. A BS will take you another two years. To answer your second question, nothing is gauranteed. If you look at a course outline for nursing school, it is laid all so that you can take all of the required classes in two years. However, if you fail a class or don't register for enough credit hours, it will take longer.
2 :
please go to a technical college for your nursing school instead of a private school I went to a private nursing school and a private massage school and they both had their major errors. technical colleges allow you to keep you class credits and transfer to another college instead of allowing thousands of dollars to go down the drain so don't mess up like I did

I am a Registered Nurse and I went through a community Nursing Program. No you don't have to do asscoiate nursing to get your RN. You can have a diploma from a private school. But I would strongly suggest to go through associate degree. It's only for 2 years and then you get in to RN prgram for 2 more years.
2 :
Yes, RNs have an associates degree in nursing. BSN- bachelors. LPN - about a year. NA- about six weeks.

Um... why would you? I know quite a few doctors who had to repeat some studies, but I don't think I've ever met one who became an RN. RN training is so different - I don't think you could work within a year. If I were you, I would get just any job to live on and really cram and work hard for that MD. It will take less time. Good luck.
2 :
You can take the RN Board Exam providing that you meet the education criteria.
3 :
Even if you have met all of the coursework requirements for an RN program, it is not likely that you will have met the necessary clinical rotation requirements. So before you could take your board exams and go to work as a nurse, you would have to complete those rotations. The clinical rotations that you did in medical school is most likely not going to suffice because the material covered is very different for medical students than it is for nursing students. If you think that you will not be able to pass your USMLE on the first attempt and are looking for a back up plan so that you can have some income while waiting, then I would suggest looking into laboratory work. With an MD you still have a post graduate degree in a life science, so you should be able to find work in a research lab or a clinical lab or even a lab in commercial industry. There are many of these jobs in the US because science has become a booming industry. Also, if you get in with a good pharma or biotech company then you would most likely make a higher salary as an R&D or formulations scientist than you would by being an RN. Good luck in your medical career and good luck with the USMLE.

Sorry, a nurse has their own licensing and education requirements; as do most therapists (physical, respiratory, occupational etc) and Lab technologists. You would have to apply & complete at least a 1 year program to become someone in the Allied Health fields & take the specific exams.

stay here. imagine if you take your nursing course in the Philippines. when you graduate there and come back in the USA. you still have to take some couse and pass the exam here. you will be wasting some time. i did not say a lot of time but some and your effort when you come back to the US. my Aunt have to take some more course and have to take the board exam and license when she came to the US.
2 :
money wise - Philippines education wise - USA but for your convenience, USA...
3 :
You are already in the US. Stay there, study there. Believe me, it is better in the long run.
4 :
To be honest with you, I am not sure you have the aptitude to become a nurse, much less a registered one at that responsible for making logical, informed and quick decisions under stress to protect the life of many patients simultaneously. Why? a) Perhaps the way at which you think strangers on YA Philippines could actually point you in the right direction career wise scares me a little; b) Your reasoning is faulty. If, as you said, you will make many scarifices in choosing to go back to the Philippines to take up nursing as compared to just getting the degree in the US--then why is the former even an option? The choice seems to be crystal clear, right? Again, there's little chance I would ever want you to be taking care of my if I become a patient--unless you wise up first. My advice? Find out why you want to be a nurse; does it jive with other nurses you know? Do you have the mental aptitude to do well in nursing school and subsequently in the line of duty afterwards? Do you have the emotional maturity to care for others and spend long odd hours at work? Do you? You are ultimately the only person who knows the answer.
5 :
Acctually nursing graduates of the philippines have lost their dignity because of the board exam leakage that happen a couple of years back. It will be hard getting a recognition if you graduate in the phils And some people are telling "moneywise=phils" For me the quality of education given to the student on most of the universties is not worth the cost
6 :
I have personally observed a Doctor here in the Philippines that went to the USA only to become a RN. He said it was the only way he could go there to better his career. He still had to take a short course nursing altho he was a good certified Dr. here. If you come here to go to nursing school you will still have to retake it there in the USA so why come back?
7 :
If you pursue in the Philippines I think you have to pass the PRC (Professional Regulation Commission) Test there in order to take the NCLEX in the US. If that's true then I would say no! Because the PRC only pass the top 40% test takers for 2009. As a result competition to pass the PRC is extreme at the far right side of the bell curve. Further in addition to competiting against the graduating nurses for the top 40, you also have to beat out all the retesters. Further, you can't really take the ASN in the PI, only the BSN, so if you're concerned only on time then ASN in the states is for you at two years. In the PI it would be 4 years for the BSN. The only benefit in attending college in PI is the lower tutition, but be warned as foreign students (those with foreign passports) have to pay a higher foreign rate to attend college and can only attend specific schools designated for foreign students. Other issues would be something like Air Conditioning as many classrooms do not have AC, so you can expect hot days in school. School starts in June and ends in March as summer is Mar Apr May. Best luck.

Should i Stay here in USA to get my AS degree in nursing (RN) or is it better for me to go to the Philippines? At this point of my life i am a little confused in what decision i should make. Should i stay here in the US and become an RN or should i go back to the philippines and become an RN? How long would it take me to become an RN in the philippines vs how long it would take to become one here in the US? I am not asking for BSN. Serious Answers please. this is a very big decision for me since going to Phils will have many sacrifices to make. stay here. imagine if you take your nursing course in the Philippines. when you graduate there and come back in the USA. you still have to take some couse and pass the exam here. you will be wasting some time. i did not say a lot of time but some and your effort when you come back to the US. my Aunt have to take some more course and have to take the board exam and license when she came to the US.
2 :
money wise - Philippines education wise - USA but for your convenience, USA...
Online would be cheaper
2 :
Yes, online would be cheaper, but nothing beats the experience you will get if you actually go to class on campus.
3 :
You cannot become a nurse online.Nursing school involves going to classes, doing skills labs and working in clinical settings to gain hands on experience. A legitimate accredited nursing school requires that you go to classes. No online program would result in a nursing degree. You cannot get a US degree from another country. You would have to go to the US to do it.
4 :
The on-line programs initially would be cheaper, however, just like a traditional university, each kind of education whether online or traditional has its costs and benefits. Cost differences: Traditional and Distance Learning: Most three credit-hour courses online run from $700 to $900 - a charge that's roughly comparable to the fees at most mid-range traditional schools. That means that a full online degree, including textbooks and other supplies needed, will probably require an investment of about $7,500 per semester, or about $30,000 total. Certificate programs, even at a fairly high professional level, can cost less because they involve fewer courses. For example, a certificate degree in supervisory skills at Cornell eLearning, a top school, currently costs about $5,000. It requires 11 courses. There are several ways to defray this cost. If you are employed, particularly by a mid to large-sized company, you may be able to get the company to fund some or even all of the cost of online college courses. The federal government, which has traditionally given grants only to on-campus students, has shown more flexibility in recent years about giving financial aid to online students. Don't wait until the last minute before finding out what your credit hours will cost. Many schools charge late application fees, late payment fees and other charges to people who apply just before school starts. You can keep your degree affordable by learning about "hidden charges" like graduation fees and other charges that don't seem to make sense before signing on to your online school. Traditional college tuition, including books, maintenance fees and supplies, can run up to $20,000 each year for a public four-year university. Those looking to attend a private university can expect this cost to increase to around $80,000 per year. The tuition for the same four-year degree in an online college or university will still include maintenance fees, tuition and book fees. However, room and board cost will not be necessary. Room and board at a traditional public four-year college typically costs up to an additional $50,000. For a private university, the costs are more than doubled at over $100,000. This includes transportation costs as well. Good luck
5 :
Online education is more cheaper and you can adjust your time schedule accordingly.

Nurses in USA start at at about 20 dollard an hour. This is regardless of the specialty area. They can have either a 2 year degree, 4 year degree, or a 6 year degree. They all get paid the same unless they work in management. After you have a nursing degree you must take a board exam and pass that before you are allowed to practice in any state. The salary will go up with years of experience.

id apply to the colleges u are thinking of going into. GPA is a thing they look at but they also look at ur other activities , such as sports , community services and many others. id write maybe an essay about yourself and send app in. never hurts to apply -_-. good luck and some community colleges teach nursing asweell. Good Luck
3 :
You would have to research different schools, but from what I know a lot of schools look at experience, recommendations, test scores and especially personal statements. They want someone who will contribute to the school's reputation. Trust me, I understand how u feel. I have a B.A in Psych and my overall gpa was 2.8, I was too nervous to apply to grad schools because I didn't think I could get in and I wasn't sure if I would end up getting the type of money I wanted with the jobs I would be most likely to get.

Certain degrees obtained from other countries such as nursing will require additional education and training in the United States once you return. Some degrees will not transfer at all, meaning you would have to start again - I would check with the correct authorities and universities about the possibilty of a Brazilian nursing degree transfering to the United States.

sure it is possible, if your marks are high enough. You should apply to a medical school close to where you live.
2 :
Yes because you can get into medical school with ANY BS degree, but you will likely need to take several courses to prepare yourself for entry and to prepare for the MCAT exam. In nursing programs you usually don't get higher math, organic chemistry, physics, etc. The first thing you need to do is start looking into which medical school you want to attend, then meet with the school's academic advisors to start course planning in prep for MCAT. You have to get a good score on MCAT in addition to holding a high GPA from all your undergrad coursework to be considered for entry into med school. It's very competative, so be prepared to work your butt off.

Hi all, My sister-in-law recently came from India. She was a RN in India and now she is planning to work as a nurse in USA, but she is confused about how can she start her career here. Should she do LVN program and then go for RN program or what can she do? does she have to do all her study again or she can sit in NCLex exam. Please suggest something. We live in California(if state needed). thank you.

My friend has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he stumbled upon some excellent tips on the website in the resource box below which helped him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is loads of help on the website regarding other careers.
2 :
She needs to contact the CA state board of nursing. Google their website. They will also probably have information on their site about foreign-educated nurses so you might not even have to call to find the information you're looking for.

Start looking at schools online. You can start searching on collegeboard.com. There are tons of colleges that offer RN degrees. You have to pass the language exam. Try to find one that has opportunities for scholarships and opportunities to work on campus, which the money will go straight to your tuition. Another route to this is to get your nursing degree at your home country. Then work with an agency to get a job abroad - usually in Europe you would be placed. Other places are Canada and possibly the U.S.A.

They may accept your diploma, although a four year degree is stronger, but you may have trouble getting a work visa. Check with the French Consulate in Washington. good luck

Well last time i checked, being in the 10th grade does not qualify you as a R.N. and it is against the law to pose as one when your not!!!!!
3 :
One week ago you said you were 16 years old. Did you start college at age 10? An American BSN degree may be accepted if you can pass their license examination and speak fluent French.

no. youb ahev to have some wierd thing, but obviously you dont have it. so youd have to come here and do it all over if you really wanted to. cuz, like theres docs from like india who are WAY WAY WAY WAY SWAYWA WYAWAYWYAYAYW better than docs here, but since they dont have a degree for here, they cant do anything, it was oliema total waste of time :)

I think you're on to something with the list. Specific locations require specific certifications. I know a teacher from Florida who wasn't allowed to teach in another state until she received a specific certification. But there is no global convention for normal jobs - such as office work / wall street etc. It's just a matter of convincing the employers of your qualifications. Now, in America, we do require work visas (green cards) - which has nothing to do with a degree. I don't believe they are hard to get if you are a skilled worker - but I've never tried - being American by birth.

Hello, I vote for Pharmaceutica manufacturing. You've just got to find the right niche and your skills will be very valuable. Here's an article I wrote on this a while back: http://www.pharmamanufacturing.com/articles/2005/354.html p.s. You can always find a nursing job, but is it really what you want to do with your career?

I want to do a nursing degree which can help me to be a nurse in USA. Previously I had done my under graduation in Commerce. In my town there is couple of hospital/Universities which offers General Nursing courses(which is of 3 years and after that I have to do 1 year job in same hospital). This hospital/Univesity is approoved by "Indian Nursing Council". Can somebody advice me what is the procedure of being a nurse in US but getting degree in India. Thanks

In the U.S. nurses must meet certain licensing requirements. If there is an area of the U.S. in which you wish to work you may want to contact the licensing agency in that particular state to check requirements. Another thing you could check are curriculum's of a few nursing colleges. There are two types of nursing degrees, LPN and RN. The LPN requires an Associates Degree or ASN and can be obtained in 2 years at some community colleges. The RN requires a BSN or Bachelors Degree in Nursing and takes 4 years to complete. When you check curriculum's you may want to email those schools and perhaps send the curriculum in India and compare the two programs. I don't recall having met any nurses from India but there are many doctors from your country working here. I am sure some of them came to the U.S. with their MD's.

Should i Stay here in USA to get my AS degree in nursing (RN) or is it better for me to go to the Philippines

Depending where you are staying will be the big factor in your decision. In the Philippines, there will be a lot more sickness there then there is here due to poor living conditions. You will probably be under more stress while nursing there then you are here and will probably benefit you more.
2 :
A nursing degree in the Philippines may not be accepted in the U.S. If you are planning on living and working in the U.S. after getting your degree, I would suggest going to a community college here. It will take about two years of full-time study to earn your associate's degree in nursing. Once you have the degree, you will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX exam. If you pass, you will be a registered nurse and will be able to work at hospitals and clinics in the state where you are registered.

I believe so but I hear you need to apply by April 2 in case they run out. They ran out in May last year and June graduates had to scramble into unpaid internship visas and such to tread water until more were available. So they are expected to go fast. go to uscis.gov
2 :
You need a bachelor's degree to get an H1. If you have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree with studies from your country and the associates degree here, then you can, but you need to get all your studies evaluated to see if they add up to a bachelors degree.
3 :
Yes, it is possible. Many do that.

Anyone know of any schools in the USA that offer students just the clinical portion for a Nursing Degree (BSN)
Anyone know of any schools in the USA that offer students just the clinical portion for a Nursing Degree (BSN)?
Hey everybody! Currently I am a nursing student at a school in Pa. Unfortunately, its a 2 and 2 year program where they do the prerequisites first and then the clinical portion after wards. We have to apply to get into the clinical portion of the program once we have all the prerequisites completed (for example Chem I and Anatomy etc). As far as I know, only Temple University (where I'm going) and Jefferson offer students the opportunity to complete just the clinical portion of a BSN in the state of Pennsylvania. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good nursing schools that allow a student to complete just the clinical part. Because a lot of the schools around here that I talked to say that I can apply to their respective nursing program but I would have to start their program from day one (basically the credits I took over the last year would count for nothing) As far as why I don't continue at Temple is that there are 70 seats available for their nursing program (60 of which are for Temple students) and roughly 400 people apply for those seats each year. So there is no guarantee that I will get into Temple or Jefferson for that matter

I currently rent $675/month but my building is being sold and I'm sure they will raise the rent.Would i do better by keeping it invested or buying a place with no mortgage payment.

There are way too many variables to give you a good answer on the information provided. How long will you stay in the area? What is the trend in real estate prices in your neighborhood? What other assets, liabilities, income and expenditures do you have? Seek the service of a Certified Financial Planner to help you sort through all the questions. One thing I can tell you: move the money out of the stock. Don't be invested in a single stock, there is too much risk there. I have nothing against Abbott Labs, I just don't recommend being invested in one stock, no matter how good the company is. If you decide to invest, set up a diversified mix of mutual funds, tailored to your risk tolerance and time horizon. Good Luck!
2 :
Thats a tough question. If you take the money out now you only have to pay taxes on the increase in value since the date of his death. And if you sell the Condo you can exempt 250 thousand of gain from taxes, as long as you lived in it for two years. Abbott is safer than most stocks. I would compromise and take part of it out to buy the Condo. Its also a good idea to diversify between real estate and stocks. Keeping part of it in stock it would be more liquid than a Condo, in case you needed money.

going to do a degree in Nursing in the uk and after want to move to the usa?
just a few questions. can someone explain to me in basic terms about healthcare becuase me living in the uk i get free healthcare from the NHS. how does medical insurance work over there. what on average does it cost per month. also does it cover things like cancer etc. is nursing a good area to work in the usa ? what is your opinion on living in the usa pros and cons. thanks tom

remember that your nursing Qualification will not be recognised in the USA and you will need to sit an adaptation exam and if you fail you will not be alllowed to do nursing Medical insurance will eat up a lot of your disposable income
2 :
It is foolish of you to get a Nursing education in UK and assume this prepares you for life in the USA. America has NO Socialized Health Care. It's strictly pay-as-you-go in USA for a health care plan. HEALTH CARE IN USA IS NOT FREE! USA also needs NO nurses. Too many hospitals have shut down because costs have become prohibitive, making out of work nursing staffs scrambling for jobs anywhere they can. The cost of a health care INSURANCE depends on what kind of coverage you want. The cost of prescription drugs can run thousands of dollars a week for terminal illnesses such as cancer. Immigrants do not get special priviledges when it comes to health care. If your plan does not cover the MRI and you cannot pay out-of-pocket for one, you don't get one. Simple as that. So forget thinking USA is a giant give-away for health insurance. Vision and dental are EXTRA.

Regardless of any degree you may have in another country, you have to take and pass a national nursing exam and be licensed by the state that you plan to work in. Other requirements vary by state--most also require that you graduate from an approved nursing degree program, and that you work a minimum number of hours and take continuing education courses in order to keep your license. You will also have to CPR certified., and for some jobs, ACLS certified. You can't just come into this country and work as a nurse because you have medical training in another country. A nurse's job is very different from a doctors.

4 :
Why nursing? There are so many more worthy degrees to go for that won't cause you so much stress and anger in a job situation. If you HAVE to be in health care, try physical therapy. They make more than nurses. If you want to deal with patients, that's the safest way to go. You won't have to deal with their familes so much and you almost NEVER have to put up with MD's attitudes. You can also start your own business as a physical therapist. Nurses have to work under the supervision of a doctor and haven't had the grace of becoming so independent as having their own businesses. You should also consider Pharmacy. They make a lot more money than nurses or PT's and can work just about anywhere. No MD's yell at them. Respiratory Therapists are doing just as well as nurses, income wise. And they don't have to put up with families at all. Got problems? Call the nurse. Yeah, you'll always have a job as a nurse. But you'll always be the scape-goat for the complaints. There's a nursing shortage FOR A REASON. It's a horrible job.

There's a nursing shortage FOR A REASON. It's a horrible job.

Can I start working in USA if I complete my Associate degree in nursing
Can I start working in USA if I complete my Associate degree in nursing?
I am on F1 (student) visa here in US. I am going to finish my Associate degree in Nursing from a community college in Texas. I was wondering if I can start working after I finish my Associate. If yes, then what visa I will be working on?

You can begin nursing. You will need to extend your VISA and possibly get a work VISA to work in the U.S.
2 :
After you finish school you will have to return home so you can apply for a work visa.Due to retrogression you will have several years wait. You cannot work on a student visa and you cannot change your visa without going home first.

Is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in the Philippines recognized as such in the USA
Is a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in the Philippines recognized as such in the USA?
I'm confused whether my course and school will be acknowledged in the USA, if I work there as a nurse

contact a hospital in USA and ask. There are thousands of Philipine nurses in the US.
2 :
it ought to be since the phillipines are a US territory but what can it hurt to check? ask your school about it and hospitals here in the states. many have websites and will contact you back. peace and good luck!:-)
3 :
Yes, but u need to take certain examinations to qualify you to work in the US. Before it was CGFNS, but I think it is now NCLEX that you need to pass to qualify working abroad.
4 :
You should ask your counselor or teachers at your current school. Also, ask a potential employer, such as a Dr. office or hospital if they accept such a degree. Find a website or forum that discusses this subject, you will find there will be more expertiese in your area, not just general answers. Good luck-we need all the good health care pro's that are out there!
5 :
Contact the Board of Nursing in the state you will be living in. Laws vary from state to state.
6 :
Go to allnurses.com and ask there. There are many nurses who know the answer to this question and will give you a definite answer.

USA - Nursing Degree (RN) Possible Online
USA - Nursing Degree (RN) Possible Online?
In the UK, to obtain a Nursing Diploma/Degree, you must apply to a University, and the course is then 50% academic (Uni) and 50% experience (Vocational). They throw you into the deep end as Students, over 3 years, with experience in the work place in Hospitals, Doctors Surgeries, ER, Nursing Homes, Schools, Home Visits, Operating Rooms etc. I've recently learn't (mabye incorrectly), that in the US, a Nursing qualification to be an RN Nurse - is 100% academic? If correct, one could obtain the title 'RN Nurse' with never setting foot in a Hospital or other associated medical setttings?!!! Is this true? If so how? I find it incredible a graduate would be allowed to work with patients with zero practical experience before starting work? Please enlighten me my fellow Americans. I am not having a go at your system, I simply don't believe than one can be an 'RN' nurse by taking an online course - as is advertised by the University of Phoenix, for example. Many Thanks

You can take online courses for additional study but you can't become an RN online without classroom participation and study.
2 :
to get your RN you must do clinical studies as well as classroom studies. you can get your BSN from a university or you can get an Associates in Nursing through a community college. both require clinical studies as part of instruction and taking and passing the NCLEX-RN exam for licensing. there are "bridge" programs which you can do to go from LPN to RN or Associates,RN to BSN, RN these are done as self-study or on-line but still require clinical rounds prior to completion. the bridge programs require less clinical time due to the fact that those taking the program are already nurses who are advancing there degrees. as you mentioned in particular the University of Phoenix they have campuses all across the country and offer on-line studies as well (they do advertise a lot on-line) if you look into it further you will find that the University of Phoenix does not make the claim that you can become an RN on-line. EDIT: nothing wrong with "having a go" at our system, as it is said "what does not kill you makes you stronger" so ask questions of the system and help it to improve

In the U.S. the degree to become a RN involves alot of academics and alot of clinicals - in hospitals, etc. I have a 4 yr. Bachelor's degree. Freshman year was all academics and taking pre-reqs. to actually be accepted into the nursing program. Sophomore yr. was tons of academics - nursing courses, sciences, other requirements. Had clinicals in the hospital for 1-2 full days /wk. Junior year- more academics, concentration on nursing courses intensified and the clinicals increased each week. Senior year same - lots and lots of academics and clinicals in hospitals, clinics, public health departments, homecare, psychiatric wards, you name it every week (depending on what nursing course you were taking at the time). I can't imagine becoming a RN online only. I wouldn't think it would be possible to do. If U. of Phoenix is offering online only, you might want to see if their program is accredited and if it would allow you to sit for the licensing exam - also see what kind of degree you would get.
4 :
Please do NOT throw your money away at University of Phoenix. For-profit schools are definitely not the way to go. U of Phoenix does say they help you find clinical experiences near where you live, but they offer you very little support in this area, and they offer you very little support as a student in general. So why pay them twice as much (or more!) per course when you can go to a locally based school, get the support as a student that you are PAYING the school to give you, and let them arrange your clinical experiences for you for far less money? Local colleges and universities will offer at least some portion of the courses for your degree online - at least many of your non-nursing courses (English, Math, History, Psych, etc.) can probably be completed that way. You can choose one of three routes here in the US to become an RN. The first is a hospital-offered "diploma" program which is about 2-3 years, and honestly they are going the way of the dinosaur and you would be hard pressed to find one of these programs. The second option is to obtain an Associate's Degree from a community college or a university that makes an Associate's Degree program available to their nursing students. An ADN is formally a 2-year nursing program, but you must complete pre-requisite courses in biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology (all with labs) and perhaps a few more courses before you can apply to the school's nursing program. So technically it might take you 3 years. It's also recommended you complete as many of those non-nursing courses as you can prior to starting the nursing core, because it will be very demanding. Once you start the nursing core, the courses are sequenced and it will take two years to complete. You have both classroom (theory), skills labs (to practice hands-on with other students, mannequins, computer simulations, etc.), and then you will have at least one day per week of clinical rotations. They usually start you off in a long-term care facility like a nursing home and you function at the level of a nursing assistant, doing basic patient cares and assessments, etc. The following semesters they bring you into hospitals and rotate you through acute med/surg, psychiatry/behavioral health, maternal/newborn, pediatrics, and perhaps a few other observational experiences in places like the OR. The third option is the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), which is offered by universities. You get admitted to the school as a freshman, during your freshman and sophomore years you complete many general education courses along with those science courses that are pre-reqs, then you apply to the nursing program during your sophomore year and start the nursing core during your junior year. The difference in the courses that you get with the BSN is you take more general ed and electives, and as far as the nursing courses you get more in-depth nursing theory such as history, care models, research, etc., they teach more about leadership and management, and you get a semester long course in Public Health which the ADN students do not get, which makes you eligible to be certified as a Public Health Nurse, if that interests you. You can always complete the ADN and later take a BSN completion program which commonly ARE found online, offered by local not-for-profit schools in your area. The bonus of taking your ADN first is that you might get to work a year sooner, find an employer who will pay tuition reimbursement and they can pay for your BSN completion. IMO, I wouldn't waste my time going for the LPN (licensed practical nurse) first and then going for the RN, but some people do like to have that bit of work experience first and having some money in their pocket while in school. But being an LPN first is not required, nor will it necessarily make you a better RN, because in most job settings, the LPN and RN functions are very different than you might think. You might have the advantage in some basic patient care skills, but you won't have any advantage in terms of the broader picture of the RN profession. Good luck to you!
5 :
You are mistaken, there is absolutely no way to get your RN without tons of clinical experience in a hospital. The online courses that are advertised are only part of the deal - they also have to do their rotations and have them signed off for their hours just like regular nursing schools!
6 :
Sorry, I'm in Canada, but generally this would be the same. NO, you cannot become a nurse (RN or LPN) without ANY clinical practical hands on experience. Any program offering that is not legal and not legit. You CAN complete your *theoretical* studies/courses online at some schools, and you CAN earn a BScN if you are ALREADY a diploma (2 year) RN. All practicums and clinical courses must be done on site at the school or other placement. In some cases, an RN may take theory courses and get certification in a speciality area (i.e. mental health) without ever stepping foot in a classroom. But this only applies to theory courses without labs. Good luck!

if I get my bachelor's degree in nursing abroad is it less credited than a USA degree?
I want to go to university in New Zealand to get my bachelor's in nursing. I am from the USA now and am wondering if I did go to New Zealand, would my degree be significantly less impressive than a degree from the USA? thanks! and I am fairly smart too; I would not be going to an ivy league back in the states, but a fairly good school.

You'd most likely need to get licensed in the US upon returning, but NZ and other foreign (European especially) schools are actually as good as or even better than their US counterparts.

You might have to take some licensing exam but that should be pretty easy with NZ or Australian nursing qualifications. I have friends who qualified in nursing in Australia and are working in the USA, and even Australia has plenty of USA qualified nurses. I cannot recall any of them complaining about difficulties in finding jobs in either Australia or the USA. You should be OK Hope it helps.
