Why is there a shortage of nurses in the usa?

I
am an RN, and decided to take some time off (3 yrs so far). I did this
for several reasons: 1. to spend more time with my family(my children
are in elementary school now) 2. being a nurse is very stressful,
physically and mentally 3. long hours (no more 8 hour shifts, it's 12
hour shifts now, 3-4 times a week) and most of the time I ended up
staying later to catch up on charting. 4. nurses don't get holidays
and weekends off 5. most nurses work nights some time in their career
(I was working the night shift for 4 years waiting for a day shift in
my dept to open up) My body doesn't function well with a major loss of
sleep, I didn't sleep well in the daytime, especially with small
children. 6. Most people don't like being around sick people, who
likes to clean up vomit and diarrhea all the time, or being exposed to
God knows what!
There are many courageous, loving, and giving nurses who can take on the
required tasks of being a nurse, most people can't or won't.
I am taking a RN refresher course right now to update my skills, so that
I can jump back into the crazy world of being a full-time RN, with all
the pros and cons. God Bless Me, and all nurses!

Tambara
said it well....BURN OUT!! Hospitals do NOT take care of their nurses
as well as they should. It isn't just the pay, it is standing behind
themduring tough times.....Often, it is "blame the nurses" if a patient
is unhappy, when in fact it is often understaffing that should be
blamed. Every patient deserves excellent care from hospital
staff....understaffing leaves the nurse especially vulnerable and puts
their license on the line. I love the nursing staff I work with and we
have lost so many to places that show their nurses they care.....A few
years back we had a CEO who said that nurses "were a dime a dozen".
Guess what happened??? YUP! Many of our best nurses went some where to
work for people who actually valued them...on several levels. We have
had a shortage of nurses since....by the way...that CEO died of a
massive M.I. The hospital wanted to put her portrait in the cafeteria,
but they had so many staffers who objected, there is no portrait hung
anywhere in the hospital that we know of.

Nurses have a
crappy job. See the answer about the horrible hours, backbreaking work
no holidays and gross conditions. Not to mention those male doctors,
what jerks. My mother always told me not to be a nurse and she hates me
now what does that tell you. Plus no American wants to be a nurse
nowadays because of the above conditions so the US is looking for poor
women in other countries and trust me they are all women. They bring
them here educate them, house them and hold their VISAs hostage until
they fulfill some kind of "contract" to work for a certain hospital for a
certain amount of time. Didn't y'all see that special on 60 minutes a
few years back? And believe me when I tell you that a lot of other
professions do the same: bring foreigners here educate them, house them
and hold their VISAs hostage until they fulfill some kind of "contract"
to work for a certain amount of time. Why? because Americans won't do
those crappy jobs for NO Pay

Visa for working and living in the USA
Visa for working and living in the USA?
I'm 22, just finished at Bristol Uni and want to move to live permanently in NYC. If I get a job there will I be able to move their and get a visa to work? I have very good qualifications but Im still not sure how hard it is to be permitted because a lot of people say only people who are planning in working in areas such as teaching, nursing etc get work visas?

Hi.I think you should look into this more closely. There are a lot of American citizens out of work and looking for jobs too. By rights they should get preference over a foreigner. If the job you want can not be filled with a american citizen, then hire a foreigner. Good Luck
2 :
It seems like every young person in the U.K. wants to move to NYC...and many from the U.S. want to move to London. It is almost impossible to get a work permit in the U.S. The only way is to have a very badly needed work skill and find an employer to give you a contract and sponsor your work visa. See 1st site below. You simply cannot immigrate to the U.S. unless you have an immediate family member in the U.S. to sponsor you or have a VERY rare job skill the only other way is to apply Thur the Diversity lottery program. You have to register for the lottery 2 years in advance...then only 50,000 of the 10 million or so who apply are chosen for further evaluation...tough part is, U.K. citizens are not currently eligible to apply thru this program. See 2nd site. Have you ever spent time in NYC? Do you now it costs 4 times as much to live there than the average cost of living in the U.S.? What info is your decision based on...TV and movies? The truth is, it is nearly impossible for a U.K. citizen to immigrate to the u.S. European countries are open to you...have you considered one of those? See 3rd site to read visa requirements for the U.S. I am sure this is not the news you wanted to hear...but think creatively and use that great education you just got to find what you should do now.

You don't get much more scientific than biology or anatomy and physiology. If you mean why are there no rocket scientists. Thank God you don't have rockets to study. It isn't up to America to run your educational system. That's your job. Talk to Gloria.
2 :
I agree with the first answerer. If you want that the Philippines will have that course, go to USA, study the kind of science you want, go back to the Philippines, start a school about that then done. Period. Not as easy as it sounds, actually.
3 :
Why would USA do that? We got our own problems to deal with.
4 :
what's wrong to be a maid? our current president used to be a domesticated helper in dubai.
5 :
What we gonna do with that scientist degree? As far as I know there is not many job for that. Lots of people needing nurse but not so many is building a space ship.
6 :
first, there isn't much budget to fund for education like that second, no job available for that third, since we are small in population, and there is restrains in budget, the only education available are those subservient to first world countries. that's the fact
7 :
you sit on your backside and complain that the USA should teach some courses in Philippines . Why don't you ask why the Philippines does not teach ? Think , if it does not hurt your little head . What does the USA owe you ?

yes but dealing with some patients that are drugs seeker is bad
3 :
I would say that yes, nursing is on the list as one of the demanding universal jobs a person can have. No matter where you are on thr globe and your geographical location, there is lways people that need healthcare - which makes nursing a demanding career. However, it takes a very special person to be a nurse, a good nurse, and love what they do.
4 :
Yes, nurses are in demand in many places. Before starting training you should decide where you want to work and examine where you could be allowed to work as training in one country usually is not valid in other countries.

Any state I think. The beauty of the NCLEX is that once you take it, all you have to do is cough up the licensing fees for whatever state you want your nursing license in. Contact Florida's state board of nursing and ask.

Can a foreigner with valid tourist visa apply for a SSN so i can apply for NCLEX (nurse exam) in California
Can a foreigner with valid tourist visa apply for a SSN so i can apply for NCLEX (nurse exam) in California?
I am planning to visit my family in California but i was wondering if i can get a Social Security Number during my stay there so I can apply for NCLEX exam (it is the exam needed to be passed in order to become a registered nurse in USA, short for Nursing Council Licensure Exam) in the California Board of Nursing. I will really appreciate your response. Thanks. By the way, i don't have plans of overstaying there. I just really need the SSN so i can sit for the exam here in my country.

no, a green card is needed. but after 3 years you'll be eligible for a green card. then you can get an SSN.
2 :
You can apply in your own country if your visa is valid for working in the United States. If your purpose is to visit only then NO cigar and no card.
3 :
Apply for an ITIN.
4 :
First answer- Ask the NLCEX folks if you can take the exam without a SSAN. If you explain that you're not a resident, they might allow you to use another identifying number, such as a passport number. Next answer- Open a bank account. In order to do so, you'll need a SSAN and some are available to non-residents for tax purposes. They'll have a "not valid for employment" notation, but that's OK- you're not working, just taking an exam. Last observation- when you get to take the exam, see if there are recruiters around who will get you either an H1B or a residency visa once you are certified as an RN. But that's the last part of your process. First, you need to take and pass the exam. Good luck!!
5 :
No. Only US Citizen, US Permanent Resident, Non immigrant with temporary work visa or work permit can apply SSN.
6 :
No chance, it's almost impossible for a foreigner to get a snn. And nursing is not an in demand job

Public health care in the USA
Public health care in the USA?
I don't understand why people say public health care couldn't work in the USA. They work in almost every other developed country and some are even considered superior. I'm British who's fiancée is an American currently working as a nurse in the USA. I am neither Republican nor Democrat and it really won’t affect me whether America has a public system or not I'll still need travel insurance. It really seems bizarre to me that a country that can put a man on the moon can't or won’t take care of its citizens. What is stopping it happening? Is it purely the public objection, too powerful insurance companies or simply impossible to complete? Jimmy J - As I noted in the question I have no intrest in whether USA has a Public system or not as it won't effect me. My fiancee works as a nurse in the USA so I do have an Interest. Ruiner - most of the leading and largest pharmaceutical and research companies are based in countries with public health care systems, ever heard of GlaxoSmithKline or AstraZeneca. Only 2 of the top 5 pharmaceutical companies are American and 3 of the top 8. I do like the fact that you choose Laser eye Surgery as an example since it was developed in Holland a country with a public health care system. Sorry the idea of laser eye surgery was from Holland it was first performed in Germany and then Greece. Both of which have public health care systems

When you get to the bottom of this issue, the only reason the government isn't sponsoring a univeral system is because they just don't care. Watch as Bush vetoes CHIP a plan that would cover 9 million children.
2 :
It depends on your definition of "works" - - - - the government could potentially provide something more efficiently than the market could provide that thing. It's just not the "thing" the consumers necessarily would have chosen for themselves, and generally when the government provides it, it provides it to everyone and forces some subset of that everyone to pay for it. Be it healthcare or anything else, with "government" anything, you lose the power of choice in what to buy with your own money, and for whom you must buy it. That is why the Founders envisioned the government as providing only those things that the market couldn't provide - defense, courts, roads and bridges... not ordinary goods and services. The test wasn't whether something was "needed" versus "wanted" it was whether only the government could provide it, because the government provides through coercion, and the Founders valued Liberty.
3 :
Health care is available to ALL US citizens...if you cannot afford to pay we have free clinics and emergency rooms that cannot turn you away... what exactly is the issue? That someone might have to spend their money on health insurance or a Dr. visit versus a new car payment or that credit card bill? Best friend is an RN currently studying to be a Nurse Practitioner.
4 :
In stead of saying Public Health Care why don't you call it what it really will be. Public Paychecks from the working class Health Care Giveaway Program?
5 :
I've used government provided health care. As a retired member of US Army, I'm entitled to use military health care facilities. Guess what? I don't. I have my own insurance. I've been paying my own freight my whole life and don't want to pay yours or anyone elses. I'll take care of my family, you take care of yours. Also, I suggest that as a British citizen, you stick to the problems in England. As an American, I don't give a #*>@ about what happens in England or how people govern themselves. I've heard some lovely stories about your public health care system that doesn't leave me all warm an fuzzy. Brits seem to embrace the sacrifice of liberty on a regular basis for an ever increasing big brother government. That won't fly here. Edit: And I'll stick by my contention that European's need to mind their own #*$*@ business. The only time you arrogant snobs need America is when your balls are in a vice from some petty tyrant.
6 :
I'm a Vietnam vet, covered by VA insurance...I don't care about Public health care...If you're worried about being covered, join the military,or buy your own......(Mine was paid for USN/UDT 1964-1970)....what's your excuse..? Want coverage....earn it....
7 :
Of course it would work. It would work and, if done properly, it would require less of our GDP to cover everyone than our current system does. The insurance companies rake in obscene profits. And they don't provide health care. We need to put the money into the health care system and not into the insurance companies. The insurance companies spend a lot of money on misinformation campaigns and buying politicians. I'd be willing to bet that at least one of the anti universal health care posters on here, right now, is on their payroll. At least one!
8 :
Changing the health care in the US is like trying to change course on a fully loaded supertanker. Nothing is going to change very rapidly, and changes need to be taken in small increments. Overall the US Healthcare system is on par with the British system in most major catagories. Cost for care (on a per-capita basis) Quality of services Convenience Coverage The difference is that where you guys pay for healthcare through a tax, we get insurance through our employer, or through medicare. (or is it Medicaid for the non-retired?) I'm an American married to a Brit, and I have seen your system in action, and while it is generally quite good, there are problems with it. If there weren't, there would not be a thriving private medical industry in the UK.
9 :
It's all about money and the fact that a minority of american tax payers who already get taxed for every extra penny they make would have to foot the bill for 47+ million people!
10 :
There is no good reason why we can’t have a universal health care system that is as good as, or probably better than, the health care systems in the other industrialized countries. There is a lot of mindless anti â€Å“socialism†propaganda, perpetuated mostly by those entities that are profiting most under our current faulty system. I hope that when people think this through properly they will support the development and implementation of a universal health care system for all Americans.
11 :
Because is of public knowledge that with the health care will happen exactly the same that is happening with the welfare system. Most of the people in welfare are on the system just because they "do-not-want-to-work". I've personally heard many saying that they get more in welfare that what they will get if they work. When you're dealing with such an irresponsible and lazy parasites in your society, you know ahead what is going to happen if such a health care system is implemented....And don't be so sure about the success of government health care systems until you thoroughly research what's going on in Canada with it.
12 :
I never heard of any FREE emergency rooms. Where are they located? Probably in selective areas. Any who, if you haven't noticed everything is about money. Legally, the hospital can't turn you away if you don't have insurance but they send you a FAT bill. There was a special on MSNBC, where it examined the public health care system and it mentioned that hospitals and doctors charge more to patients who don't have insurance compared to what they charge insurance companies. If that isn't wrong, I don't know what is. I don't understand why some Americans don't support universal health care, do they believe that's the first step to socialism? Are we relating back to the "Red Era" again?
13 :
What is wrong with all you other Americans? I'm an American Nurse and see the system for what it really is. A system for the wealthy. Where are all these free emergency rooms at? Last time I checked, if you visit an emergency room you'll be getting a lovely bill no matter your insurance status. I pay $100 for every ER visit. I can't imagine those who are uninsured, they get stuck paying bills in the thousands. You all seem to think that a universal system only hurts the middle class...think again. Our current private system is screwing over the middle class right now. Those who are uninsured often get treatment that costs thousands of dollars. These people usually cannot pay the bill and hospitals are stuck in the red. The hospitals therefore increase their charges to makeup the difference, and the cost gets passed on to consumers. Yep that's right, middle class consumers are fronting the bill for all these uninsured people even under our private system you seem to charish! Quality of care in America. Well we are behind most of the western world in infant mortality and primary care. How about nursing quality? I know first hand the system is made to be profitable and doesn't care about your healthcare quality. The hospital I work in would rather have the fewest amount of nurses with the maximum amount of patients than to hire an extra nurse. Many times me and fellow co-workers will volunteer for extra shifts but are told we don't need to come in. The hospital would rather give each nurse 6-7 patients than to pay an extra nurse for the day. This means overworked nurses and decreased care. Many of times I've had several patients that I only saw once during a shift because I had other critical patients that I was swamped with. If you happen to be a patient that ambulates independently, don't expect to see a nurse very often. I also hope you don't have a sudden heart attack, it could be hours before a nurse would notice. By the way, I work in a top 50 hospital in the US and cannot believe how poor the quality of healthcare is. I can't imagine what inner city hospitals must be like. Why does everyone assume that the uninsured don't work hard? You all seem to say people who can't pay for their healthcare must be unemployed or work at McDonalds. I know people who went to college and have decent jobs that still struggle to pay for healthcare! Social workers for instance are often only paid $11-12/hour in my area. Most of them have college degrees as well. I have a social worker friend whose insurance premium is $75/month and she has a $800 deductable each year. We aren't even counting co-payments. That's alot of money for someone who works hard and is only paid $12/hr. What about people who have cancer and are unable to work? The FMLA only guarentees you can leave for 12 weeks without losing your job. You don't receive any pay at this time. I work on an Oncology floor and have seen many cancer patients who begin to develop anxiety disorders because they are likely to lose their homes. Not only do the patients suffer, but so do their families. This just isn't right. Why in America would we allow the most vulnerable of people to suffer so greatly? To whomever said that we should look after our own family and let others fend for themselves.....would you like to meet some of my cancer patients and tell them it's too bad they got cancer. Do you want to tell them sorry for losing their house and job, but good luck with the chemo? You are one of the completely heartless people that makeup this forsaken country. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd gladly pay a bit more in taxes if I knew it was helping those in need. If I should come down with cancer, I'd like to know that if I beat cancer I'd still have my home and job to go back to. Many European countries have more socialized medicine and do just a well, if not better at treating their citizens. I hope some of you with the "me only" attitude have the brains to actually research the topic and talk to citizens in other countries. I think you'll find America could do much better than the current system.

Bottom line: Money. Everything else is just an excuse. Too many people working in the health industry in the US (and not generally the dr's and nurses) making a fortune off the misery and devastation of the sick. Think pharmaceutical companies and medical supply, the list is endless. the last thing they want to see is their prices for services / medicine go down. These people are a powerful political lobby. Theres also a fear of higher taxes to the middle class who want to maintain their lifestyle now. They fear a German style 75% tax eventuality. I have health insurance. I pay $250 a mos for it *thru* my employer, I then have a $2,300 K yearly deductible. This will get worse and worse each year. Eventually it will be cheaper to go in a nationalized direction as this is just going to continue to pull more and more $$ from worker's pockets. Its amazing how many people have mentioned free ERs. I know you can't be denied, but how expensive the ER is! Its is so much CHEAPER to treat those conditions before they get to that level of care needed.

Well, look at it this way, If the US had public health care then pharmaceutical and research companies wouldn’t have to strive to compete over each other so we wouldn’t be able to make the strides in medicine that we make all the time. Like Artificial organs, robotic arms, miracle cures, and even cosmetic surgery (if you really go for that sort of thing). I have a perfect and easily understood example too… in a â€Å“free health care†world, companies would have never developed lasik eye surgery for bad vision. Think about it, you would be registered as an individual with poor eye vision, be given a â€Å“free eye exam†(after your 30-60 day waiting period) and have to purchase your own pair of glasses… unless you REALLY want the government standard regulation glasses that make you look like a dork. The government would never try to develop something like corrective eye surgery with lasers because, the government would see no need to evolve beyond their current system of doing things. And thus- no medical progress is made, unless a terrible plague breaks out, and it becomes a national matter. Face it, in a country with free health care you will be stuck with a hook, instead of a robotic arm, you will be stuck with glasses, instead of real working eyes, you will be placed on a organ donation list, instead of getting an artificial heart, you will be stuck with a horn instead of a cochlear implant, for a hearing aid, you will be stuck with a dissatisfied woman instead of an erection, you will be stuck with dental cap, after dental cap, instead of proper fillings or false teeth, you will be stuck in a mental institution instead of getting depression pills. (some of these examples are bogus- but you get the picture) Our advancements will surely come to a standstill… Your entire healthcare system will be measured by social status. It is because of the medical advancements in the United States that makes your mediocre foreign free healthcare possible/ acceptable.

Isn't it sad that the French have done more for Libya than the USA, is Obama answering the 3am phone or not?
France is sending "massive" medical aid to Libyan opposition in the liberated city Benghazi. The humanitarian effort comes amid criticism of the French government's dealings with authoritarian regimes. The French government has announced that it will send two planeloads of medical aid to support Libyan opposition territories. The planes, which are due to leave on Monday, will carry doctors, nurses, medical equipment and medicine to the liberated city of Benghazi. "This will be the start of a massive humanitarian aid operation to the populations of liberated areas," French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon said on Monday.

Not particulary, all Western powers have failed to anticipate what's happening in the Arab world and are still wondering what they should do. France is only acting so it can protect its interests. The current crisis could push hundred of thousands of North-African people to immigrate in Europe, France has a colonial past in Africa and always watches closely what happens and above all there is the problem of oil. Countries act almost only for their interests, humanitarian actions aren't priorities and often hide an agenda. By the way, the US have positioned some of their forces near Libya and the American government has warned Gaddafi that he should step down. The US are also negociating with the UN and NATO to block the Lybian aerial space, so implying Obama is being passive doesn't make sense. 3Li7E: "We hate the French, the world hates the French" The world doesn't hate the French, France is actually one of the most liked and admired countries in the world, only English-speaking people, particulary the British and some ignorant Americans, have a problem with France.

Libya is in France's back yard. They're neighbors and major trading partners. We did the same for Haiti. We can't be everything to all people anymore.

What should I be, a nurse or a dentist? Which is better?
If I was to choose to be a dentist don't I have to own my own dental clinic when I start or can I work like in a hospital? (Im not sure if they have dentists at the hospitals here in the USA... They do where I'm from though.. :D) I see. How many years does it take to become a dentist?

Dentists make more money, however if costs a lot more for the education to become one than it does to be a nurse.
2 :
You have to ask your self do you like working and taking care of just the mouth or do you like working on other parts of the body.It takes the same amount of time to be an MD as it dose to be a DDS.

It is honestly not too hard to become one. My Mom was an RN and went to a nursing school (I'm not sure how long though). Most community colleges offer nursing courses which are 2 years long, if you really want to go far you'd do 4 years. But, I'm not sure how long actual nursing school is.
2 :
Many community colleges offer an RN program which is 2 years. Often there is a waiting period and you may have to complete some pre-requisite study before the RN courses. There are also 4-year BSN programs [Bachelor of Science - Nursing]. Those would be at a 4 year college. I have known students who were on a waiting list for the RN program at the community college and completed their BSN at a different college while they were waiting.

First off nursing is a tough program... I hope you are really good at science or are at least prepared to work your butt off getting As and Bs in your science courses. At my school, the BSN (Bach. Sci of Nursing) science courses required are: General Bio Fundamentals of Organic and Biochemistry Microbiology Human Anatomy Nutrition Physiology Pathophysiology And the nursing courses are rigorous as well. Community colleges do not require nearly as many sciences as a 4yr program would and in general are a bit easier. Like the other person said, if you want to get further in your nursing career, get your BSN (plus it pays a little more). Goodluck

A question about USA visa from the Philippines
A question about USA visa from the Philippines?
A question about USA visa, I hope someone here would know the answer or could point me in the right directions. My friend, a Pinay nursing student, was recently engaged to an American who had started the Fiancée Visa process. They broke up and he supposedly sent a letter to the embassy informing them to cancel the visa application. She is concerned that this would affect her chances for a work visa to the USA or a future fiancé visa? Does she have anything to worry about?

Sure it would affect everything. It would appear she is just wanting to get out of her own country at any cost, including marriage fraud. She has to apply for a work visa on her own.

What are the college degrees that are in demand in the USA
What are the college degrees that are in demand in the USA?
What else besides nursing? What about the following? Electrical engineering, psychology, or philosophy.

Engineering is the golden ticket. I read that we import 60% of our engineers. The worst one is probally...finance, philosophy, art, etc. Psychology was the most popular major in the country when I graduated, so I would toss that out. My cousin got a Philosophy degree, and now he is getting a job repairing power lines. Just think: if the work getting the degree is ridiculously hard and involves lots of math, the job that results is probally in demand.
2 :
I agree, Engineering is going to continue to be a highly sought after position, particularly Environmental Engineering. Mechanical, structural, and civil are a bit saturated, though any engineering associated with technology products has great potential.
3 :
Engineering degrees still find some demand. However, if you are a US-educated foreign student, even getting a masters in electrical (or other) engineering specialty, you have little to no chance of getting a job in the US now. Just spent the summer with foreign students, including engineering, and not one has been able to find a job with an employer willing and able to get them an employment visa. Too costly, too time-consuming, too much trouble. Hiring Americans is cheaper, faster, simpler. Of course, if you are not US-trained, don't waste your time applying for anything in the US. The real unemployment jumped to 22.5% in September and is climbing again. Over 31 million Americans are desperate for work, and more are about to be laid off. E.g. financial sector looks to lose 80,000 more jobs with the next 6 months; 2 months ago, that was expected by end-2011. Psych & philosophy have been glutted for decades. Only a third of all US PhDs ever find work in their field. That's been true since the 1970's. For psych, it's about a quarter; for philosophy, less than 10%. No PhD in Philosophy, no jobs at all ever.
4 :
None of those degrees would get you sponsorsip. You need a PHD and many years expereicne in order to qualify for sponsorsip. There are lots of graduates in the US without work.
5 :
Engineering & Medicine Oh and NEVER bother with Philosophy. It's a good example of a purely academic, yet useless subject in the world. Arts'y subjects generally are, to be truthful. Unless you go into Law, but that's another matter. Foreign lawyers aren't in demand in the US, and it's not practical anyway, seeing as laws differ all around the world.

She has allot to worry about. The biggfest single thing with a "single" person is proving intent to return. She started a fiancee visa which proves she intends to reside in the USA. I seriously doubt she will be approved.
3 :
I disagree with the last answer. Her intent was to come to the USA for marriage. Since it was canceled in good faith, I dont see a problem in the future with a work visa or a future K1 Fiance Visa. However I do know that a TOURIST visa is much more difficult to obtain and that you have to show strong ties and a high probability that you'll return after coming to the states!

id apply to the colleges u are thinking of going into. Good Luck

You would have to research different schools, but from what I know a lot of schools look at experience, recommendations, test scores and especially personal statements. They want someone who will contribute to the school's reputation. Trust me, I understand how u feel. I have a B.A in Psych and my overall gpa was 2.8, I was too nervous to apply to grad schools because I didn't think I could get in and I wasn't sure if I would end up getting the type of money I wanted with the jobs I would be most likely to get.

In the U.S. nurses must meet certain licensing requirements. If there is an area of the U.S. in which you wish to work you may want to contact the licensing agency in that particular state to check requirements. Another thing you could check are curriculum's of a few nursing colleges. There are two types of nursing degrees, LPN and RN. The LPN requires an Associates Degree or ASN and can be obtained in 2 years at some community colleges. The RN requires a BSN or Bachelors Degree in Nursing and takes 4 years to complete. When you check curriculum's you may want to email those schools and perhaps send the curriculum in India and compare the two programs. I don't recall having met any nurses from India but there are many doctors from your country working here. I am sure some of them came to the U.S. with their MD's.

Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs in USA
Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs in USA?
Are there any other schools on the level of UPenn Nursing, UVA Nursing, Georgetown Nursing...etc? I need a list!

University of Pennsylvania is a good nursing program, however I could attend a nursing program through my local hospital, and when I graduate, you and I would be making the same amount. Nursing is nursing. You won't learn anything there that I wouldn't learn. You will still learn the same skills and techniques, and be taught how to care for patients just the same. Universities don't know things that no one else knows. It's all the same. Those nursing programs also cost LOTS of money. You could easily get your RN through a local nursing school or hospital, then go to UPenn or Georgetown to get your RN-BSN and you would still have the credentials of graduating with your BSN from that school. So it doesn't matter. Good luck in your decision :)

How to validate subjects in colleges here in USA which were taken from another country.
How to validate subjects in colleges here in USA which were taken from another country.?
I would like to know what are the procedures of colleges and universities of USA in validating subjects that I have taken from another country particularly in the Philippines. I have finished up to 2nd yr of BS Nursing and I am about to take a healthcare related course here in the USA. Some of the subjects from the curriculum is the same as the subjects that I have taken back in the Philippines. So I would like to know if there is a possibility that my previous subjects be validated in the school that I am about to attend to

" is there a possibility that my previous subjects (from the Philippines will) be validated in the school that I am about to attend in the USA ?" There is a possibility, but no guarantee. Each college has its own procedures; they usually check with the prior university and then decide if all or part of your credits will transfer. Some schools do this by having you take something like the final exam for their courses to judge if you should get credit. Most colleges/universities will tell you their procedures without you having to enroll - so you could talk to several universities and go where you are likely to get the most credit from your previous courses.

first you have to have the money for the schooling, and then contact the school you want to attend.
2 :
Before considering nursing, I'd suggest that you take a good English course first. Simple spelling errors (afrucan) can mean the difference between life and death when treating a patient. Many drugs have similar spellings and even sound similar but can be lethal if the wrong one is given. To be a nurse, you have to be able to write legibly and without any errors as the next nurse on duty will work from your notes. Therefore, if you make a spelling error, the next nurse will treat the patient according to that error.

I'm an immigrant i'm only 21 years old i've been going to college for 2 year. I want to become a nurse.
i came to the united state when i was 8 years old. I dont have a social security, VISA, or a work permit. Is it posibble to use my TIN number to work. What other options do i have to have a career and work in usa. Is their any organization that can help me so i can become a nurse.

A TIN stands for taxpayer identification number and it only has value when you do your taxes. Even if you are illegal and you work, you need to report your earnings to the IRS. I believe it starts with a 996. Call the Social Security Administration in your state, but I don't think its much you can do if you are illegal.
2 :
You will need to go back to what country you came from and go thru the legal way of being here. WITHOUT a SSN can't get work at all. Well not suppose to.
3 :
If you do not have a social security card, this means either you are here in the states illegialy, or you need to still file for one-which your parents/guardian should of done for you long ago. If it is the first, you will need to obtain at least a green card and possibly a student visa. There are lawyers who specialize in this whom you could contact for the information you need, as well as costs. Just consulting these lawyers is generally free so you could at least come away with knowing whom to contact to get the ball rolling for you. Otherwise, if you know your country of origin you might wish to contact the embassy for that country-they may have some excellent resources for you to try. If you can or wish to obtain full US citizenship, there are a few steps that must be taken, but someone else would have to answer them as being a natural born american myself I would not know off hand. Again, lawyers who work with immigrants are a excellent source of informed information. By obtaining full citizenship, you may qualify for grants and loans that could help you a great deal with the Nursing courses costs, as well as living expenses if you choose to attend school full time. Good luck! :)
4 :
If you are an illegal alien, you can not be licensed as a nurse. You can not work legally at all. It's impossible. An ITIN must be used in conjunction with a legal visa for employment and identification purposes.

those filipina nurses just arent used to noisy people. they think being loud and black is ragedy. they dont know any better. filipinos generally are people who like to criticize. it's how they try to feed their ego. knowing that they're better than someone in atleast one way.
3 :
to the person above me your people are rude, nasty, loud, stuckup, and you were slaves in the USA right next to us. The only reason you have gotten any where now is because all the nurses are from the philipines not the usa. You people have no personality, you steal a piece from everyone to make up one and you have your nerve trying to put down black people. If you know how white people can't stand you you'd quit thinking you are all that. White people refer to filipino's as n g r s to so don't around thinking you are the perfect race your not. I could go a little more but I think you need to know you ain't no better than any one else. Did you know during the world's fair when the ST Louis Arch was built white people kept filipino's in a cage because they thought you were monkeys and put you on display. They don't like you either and no black should either. You are the most racist people and actually have nerve to put some else down. a s s h o l e.

Moving to USA from UK at 18 with the family, so nervous! will I fit in?
ALSO what is the equivalent of university in USA? Very confused and hoping to sort it out when I get there. I've finished college here and hoping to study nursing!

Sorry, I don't really understand the "equivalent of university in USA" part. But the US is a great place to study about nursing and becoming one! Although I am not from the UK, I do know how it is like to move from one place to another. My father was asked to move to Shanghai, China from San Jose, California for a higher position in his job. At that time, I was quite young, only 9 years old. Luckily I spoke Chinese because my father was born in China. Your lucky you are moving to a country where you at least speak the same language, even if you have different accents. As you probably know, the US is a country where there are many different people with different backgrounds. So there are many different accents everywhere. When I moved to China, I was surprised at how different it was. It was nothing like what I thought. China is still kind of behind in culture. The people there have such a different life. They did outrageous things that I thought was disgusting beyond belief, rude, and very unclean! But then again, everyone is raised up differently. So I think if you be yourself, people will like you and you will fit in easily, because true friends should like you for who you are and what you do. It's always good to be a little different from everyone else. If everyone was the same, wore the same clothes, acted in the same way, this world would be very boring. I hope I helped and best of luck in your new home!

In the US, universities and colleges are used almost interchangeably. The progression is high school (usually grades 9-12) to college (4 year undergrad degree) to grad school (2 yr Masters, 4-6 yr Doctorate). There are a lot of deviations from this (community college, professional school, trade, etc), but that is the most basic. For nursing, there are many levels, including some that require no university, but just specific training to some with Bachelors and Masters degrees. There are a LOT of nursing schools here, though. Will you fit in? That depends on your personality, and how willing you are to accept that we do things differently here. Our pronunciations and spellings are different, not wrong. We are louder, and tend to do things bigger than you are probably used to. We can be crass and petulant, but turn right around and be the most generous people you could imagine. We come from all over the world, and the "American culture" is one that changes and flexes all the time. Just do your best to accept the differences without a lot of commentary, answer questions about whatever nation you lived in (you'll be shocked at how little geography or world politics Americans generally know), and you'll be fine. Your accent (yes, when you are here, it is YOU who has the accent) will get a fair amount of positive attention, as we generally like foreigners from east of us (south gets some trouble right now, but east is good). Oh, and football is a game where the ball rarely touches feet, while soccer is only just starting to gain some attention. Rugby doesn't really exist (sadly), and cricket is of no real interest to almost anyone. We play our football, baseball, basketball, and somewhat hockey. Be a little familiar with each of them, and you'll be able to break the ice with a lot of people here. Good luck!

Is USA Scholarship Services legit, and should you have to pay to process the application
Is USA Scholarship Services legit, and should you have to pay to process the application?
I received a letter today stating that I am eligable for a scholarship for people majoring in Nursing. It says that there is a $25 processing fee, but it would be refunded if you fail to qualify for at least $1,000. I have never had to pay for a scholarship before. I was wondering if anyone has any info on this. I looked up the web page for them and it has different scholarships available for different majors. But how do can you tell if it is a legit scholarship program???

Scam, You never have to pay to recieve Scholarships

You should not have to pay someone to help you find a scholarship. You are basically paying them to help you find scholarships that ARE NOT GUARANTEED becuase you paid them. You can do that on your own by going to websites like www.collegeanswer.com. They hold over 2.4 million different type of scholarships and just for using there service which again it is free you are entered to a 1,000 scholarships giveaway. All you do is fill out your profile like who you are what are your interest, etc... www.fastweb.com is another good one. When you fill out the FAFSA to apply for Federal aid be careful when you enter the web address. If you go to www.fafsa.com it takes you to a service to where you pay a fee they will fill out the FAFSA for you claiming that they will guarantee your FAFSA is complete accuratly and track it for you. Although they may be a legite service there is no need to pay some to fill it out for you when it is easy to complete and there are edits even within the FAFSA on the web to catch common errors. If there are errors you or the school can update them online quick and easy. The offical website to complete the FAFSA is www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you do not understand something you can call the Federal processors for free and you can also call your schools financial aid office. Do not pay them. Save that money!!!

http://www.lehigh.edu/~infao/index.htm go to this url above!!! I just received a letter today about this USA Scholarship Services Scholarship for Biology majors to receive $7,500 scholarship and asking for 25 bucks!!! Or in other words the same one as you...so I decided to google its name b/c it sounded like a scam and long and behold this was the first thing that popped out on the url held above [ IMPORTANT MESSAGE: We have recently been made aware that Lehigh University students are being solicited by scholarship search companies. We strongly urge you to check any company with the Better Business Bureau and we advise against using any company that requires payment to do a search. Lehigh University does not sell names to any company. The two most recent solicitations were issued through "College Financial Advisory" and "USA Scholarship Services". ] If you follow the page to a link in the bottom for Scholarship Scams and search for this supposed "USA Scholarship Services" it will show you all of it court cases and fraudalent activity. You could probably find any other legit or illegit scholarship companies on the site. Good luck I know all us health majors need it!!! And just in case I am under my little brother's user name because I don't have a yahoo id and I just stumbled upon your post through google, so if anyone else needs to see this here's your red flag!!!! :-)

What are some cheaper colleges/universities that accept international students in the USA, and offer scholars?
I know someone who want to bring their son over, and he would like to know what some good colleges, that offer good/substantial scholarships are. His son would like to pursue nursing, or something in healthcare.

You should tell your friend's son to look at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. Winona State University is cheap: it costs about $10000 per year for international students. It also has a great nursing program. Best of luck to your friend's son.

Transferring college credits from USA to Canada, possible
Transferring college credits from USA to Canada, possible?
Hi guys, i really need help and find all the helpful information as possible. I'm basically trying to transfer my credits in United States into Canada, I'm going for a BSN (bachelor in nursing). Is this possible for me to finish my degree in Canada? I have a place to stay and everything i just want to know if its possible. Also if my credits were transferred, can i apply for a permanent citizenship, working permit, or anything at all while going to school in Canada? Thank you, any advice would be nice.

It should be possible, although you may need to redo some of your nursing coursework. This would happen if you were to transfer to a new uni in the US as well. Don't be shocked if this happens. The US and Canadian uni systems are similar enough that you should be able to "transfer credits" and get some sort of advanced standing in the Canadian degree. Keep in mind that the financial aid you may be getting in the US won't follow you to Canada. I don't know if any Canadian unis offer financial aid to foreign students, so you'd need to ask about that. In terms of fees, you'll need to pay the international (or US, if it's offered) student rate, which is normally higher than the rate for Canadians. You also need to prove, for your student visa, that you have those funds: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-who.asp I believe that nursing is still considered a high demand occupation in Canada, and that will increase your chances of obtaining a work permit there. In addition, the fact that you got your degree in Canada will also help toward that. Canada uses a sort of a points system re: immigration, so having a degree from a Canadian uni, having studied nursing, that all adds points. Other things that may add points are things like having ancestral ties to Canada, speaking French fluently, etc. To apply to stay on in Canada, you'd go this route: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/cec/index.asp

I'm a single gal living in the USA, but I'm thinking about moving to Australia... Should I?
I'm a Nursing Student about to recieve my license. I have been studying my ass off, and I think I might want to travel to Australia for some adventure! I might even want to live there and be a travel nurse, who knows! I enjoy adventure, warm climates, the beach, nature, animals, good food and drink, and awesome fun people. I'm hoping to find this in Australia... Please give me some pros and cons so I can make my decision! Thanks! :)

There are limitations on people applying to live here ...the joint is nearly full ! It all gets down to whether or not your profession is on the skills shortage list or if you can obtaina work sponsor. Maybe the first thing to do is check the website & see if nursing is on the list & then to contact hospitals across the country & go from there .. There are usually staff shortages in outback towns ...the pay & conditions are usually better than in the cities & you'll get to experience real Aussie life rather than just another big city. www.immi.gov.au

I think it will be easy to find work as a registered nurse but you may have to go through the process for each state; not too sure. One negative is that things seem to be quite expensive at the moment, especially renting an apartment. All the best and enjoy Australia!
3 :
Australia is way safer, no guns (all illegal except for Police), no gangs, no Marijuana and drugs etc. Finish your nursing course and get over here. As for the scenery, it's beautiful, very warm depending where you live. Lots of restaurants, European, Asian and contemporary Australian cuisine - pretty much similar to American food, except not everything's fried! :D On the other hand, you'll need to have some money for rent, buying a car. You'll have to find a job, home (or rent), and you probably don't have family and friends - but it probably doesn't matter because as Oprah said "You (Australians) are so damn friendly!" All the best, email me if you want.
4 :
Normally you stand no chance of getting into Australia on a long-term working visa without at least two, probably four, years of practical experience after qualifying in your chosen trade or profession in your home country. At this stage by far and away would be a working holiday visa. These are available to persons aged from 18-30 and are valid for 12 months. They are designed to let 'young people" come to Australia for an extended holiday and to finance it by short-term working (6 months max any one employer) whilst here. Do not expect to get good career-enhancing employment! This is lightweight stuff just to finance your next move around the country. For all of the answers to all of your questions regarding visas, immigration, the Australian way of life etc, follow this link to the very informative government site : http://www.immi.gov.au

Steve is full of it there are gangs and drugs here just like everywhere else in the world but having say that as long as you go to the right places and dont do anything stupid you will be fine. I have worked in tourism before so if you want any information on things to do email me catherine_s@live.com Australia can be a dangerous place though nature wish, make sure if you go to a beach you go to one with life guards a lot of tourists get themselves into trouble at beaches, be careful of rips I have been stuck in one before a place called Newcastle is filled with them. As for the wildlife there are many dangerous creatures here don't go up the top of Australia and if you get bitten by a snake, spider, jellyfish etc. go to the hospital even if you feel fine. No one dies from spider bites but trust me you will want the painkillers. Oh and look up a thing called Magpies. Ok thats all the negative stuff but besides that honestly Australia is amazing place and its so diverse what every you desire to do you can whether it be snorkeling the great barrier reef, checking out tropical rain forests, experiencing the desert and uluru. The most touristy place I found is the gold coast you should look it up. Anyway give me an email and I can recommend hotels, attractions, beaches and anything else you want to know

I would wait until a democrat goes in office, and that way you can get Russian or a Chinese address, depending on what side of the wall you live on, we can only wait and see. What!! With All The Guns confiscated, how would we be able to stop someone, who wanted to start a dictatorship? Sorry, I kind of got off subject.

If an employer petitions for an EB-3 immigrant visa for a nurse, the nurse may bring immediate family members with him/her to the U.S. as legal permanent residents. An EB-3 could be accompanied by a spouse (E3-4)and children (under 21) (E3-5). So, they could apply for SS cards because they would be permanent residents too.
